OBESITY: PREVENTION OR TREATMENT?
Few would disagree that prevention is better than a cure. Medically, economically, psychologically and socially, preventing obesity at national or individual level must be preferable to treatment. However, weight management as a medical intervention must be made available to obese individuals, when appropriate, to support their weight-management attempts. If it is not, we fail in our obligations to our patients and miss out on the undoubted benefits of medically supported, moderate weight loss. If the conditions that cause obesity can be improved, and if we can inform, educate and facilitate the introduction of better nutrition and activity levels on a national scale, the health and economic benefits would be profound. Significant environmental change requires the will and support of government and national institutions, including the education, health and medical professions. It will also require cooperation with the food industry, the advertising industry and all individual members of society, who have a personal responsibility to take steps to promote their own well-being. Clearly this is not the situation at the current time and much needs to be done to persuade national government to take stringent measures in order to reverse the trend towards obesity.
