USING OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATIONS TO TREAT YOUR NOSE

When Not To Use OTC Medications
If you don't need it, don't take it. Very mild symptoms do not need medications. In addition, do not use OTC nasal medications if you have the following conditions:
- High blood pressure
- Angina
- Skipped beats of your heart or other heart rhythm problems
- An overactive thyroid gland
- Pain in your head or face
- Pregnant, planning to be pregnant, or are nursing
- Blowing blood or pus from your nose
- Symptoms that have been present for longer than two weeks
- Symptoms that go away but recur over and over
- Symptoms that are getting worse rather than better while taking medication
- Symptoms that include loss of hearing or pain in your ear

How To Safely And Effectively Use OTC Medications
- Be reasonably sure that your symptoms are not a reflection of something more serious.
- Select a product that will help your symptoms.
- Use products composed of only a single agent, either decongestant or antihistamine, when possible.
- Products containing two or more antihistamines are no more effective than products with a single antihistamine.
- Products containing more than one decongestant are no more effective than products with - a single decongestant.
- Combination products with more than one antihistamine or decongestant are no more effective than those with a single antihistamine and a single decongestant.
- There is no advantage in adding a pain-relieving medication to either an antihistamine, a decongestant or a combination product. If you have pain with your nasal symptoms, and do not otherwise have headaches, call your doctor.
- Do not take more medication than is suggested by the manufacturer.
- Do not take more frequently than recommended by the manufacturer.
- Take the medication you select only as long as you need it. If you need it longer than a week, however, discuss your symptoms with your doctor.
- If you are using liquids, shake them well before using and measure your doses with a standard measuring device, one that accurately measures the dose in either teaspoons or milliliters. These can be obtained from your pharmacist.
