Drug Medical Information
IPRATROPIUM BROMIDE (ATROVENT) NASAL SPRAY: USE AND EFFECTS
When it becomes available for nasal problems, Atrovent will be a nasal spray, and the typical recommended dose will be two sprays in each side of your nose either 2 or 3 times daily. It will first come as a 0.03 percent solution, later as a 0.06 percent solution. Completed and published studies suggest that the more concentrated solution (0.06 percent) may be more effective in treating runny noses caused by the common cold.
Indications for Ipratropium Bromide
So far ipratropium bromide has been shown to be effective in reducing or relieving the runny nose component of several common nasal disorders:
The common cold
Perennial allergic rhinitis
Non-allergic perennial rhinitis
Temperature (cold/hot) induced rhinitis
Gustatory rhinitis
When first released, it is likely that Atrovent Nasal Spray will be recommended for the control of runny nose. The studies that have been completed and published show that Atrovent Nasal Spray 0.03 percent is both safe and effective in patients with the forms of rhinitis listed above. When first released, it is likely to be used after other medications have been tried and have failed rather than as a first-line treatment for runny nose. However, my guess is that once it is discovered by physicians in general, and the public, this will change, and that ipratropium will become a first-line medication for runny noses.
Contraindications of Ipratropium Bromide
Ipratropium bromide is contraindicated only in people who are allergic to it. This is a very, very rare occurrence.
Side Effects of Ipratropium Bromide
Side effects are confined to the nose and mouth. As you might expect, since it reduces nasal mucus and is sprayed into the nose, the most common side effect is dry nose. The next most common side effect is dry mouth. This also makes sense, since after it is sprayed into the nose it is swallowed. Infrequent other side effects include nasal irritation, nasal crusting, dry mouth, and nasal bleeding seen in some patients on high doses. Each of these side effects is usually not severe enough to cause discontinuation of the medication and can be diminished by reducing the number of sprays per dose.
It is important to note here that ipratropium bromide will not affect your sense of smell, cause the mucociliary clearance mechanism in your nose to malfunction, lose its effect on the control of runny nose with prolonged use, cause changes in the cells of the lining of your nose, cause rebound nasal stuffiness, or affect your blood pressure, heart, or vision.
Do Not Take Ipratropium Bromide If You Have Any of the Following Medical Conditions:
Narrow-angle glaucoma
Urinary retention
Pregnancy
Nursing mothers
