CORTICOSTEROID NASAL SPRAY FOR RUNNY NOSE
Beconase/Vancenase
Generic name: beclomethasone diproprionate. Beconase and Vancenase are, in fact, the exact same product sold by two different companies under different common names. Allen & Hanburys manufactures the Beconase line and Schering Corporation manufactures the Vancenase line.
Beclomethasone was first introduced into the United States in the 1970s. Then, it was available only as a metered dose inhaler, similar to an asthma inhaler, but designed to spray medication into the nose. Since then, it also has been introduced as a water-based spray solution, and the delivery apparatus of both of the metered inhalers (Beconase Nasal Inhaler/Vancenase Pockethaler) have been redesigned to improve delivery of the medication into the nose. Each actuation of any of the spray solutions or metered inhalers delivers 42 micrograms of beclomethasone diproprionate into the nose. The usual dosage for Vancenase AQ and Beconase AQ is 1 or 2 inhalations in each nostril two times a day. The usual dosage for Vancenase Pockethaler and Beconase Nasal Inhaler is one inhalation in each nostril three times a day.
Nasalide
Generic name: flunisolide. This product was first introduced into the United States in the mid 1970s as a nasal spray. It is not available as a metered dose inhaler. The spray device is calibrated so that each squirt delivers 25 micrograms of flunisolide into the nose.
Most adults require two sprays in each side of the nose 2 to 3 times a day to obtain control. Once control has been obtained, the dose can be reduced to the minimum that will continue to provide control.
Nasacort
Generic name: triamcinolone. It is available as a metered dose inhaler and is calibrated so that each spray delivers 55 micrograms of triamcinolone into the nose. The beginning dose can range from two puffs each side of the nose each AM to two puffs each side of the nose twice daily. The higher dose may work more rapidly. Like all nasal corticosteroid sprays, optimal relief may take as long as three weeks. Once relief has been obtained the dose should be gradually reduced to the lowest that continues to provide relief. If relief has not been obtained after three weeks of use, discuss this with your doctor.
