Ranitidine is in a group of medications called histamine-2 blockers. Ranitidine works by reducing the amount of acid your stomach produces. MANIFESTATIONS OF METABOLIC SYNDROME
In patients with insulin resistance, it is only the insulin receptors in muscle and adipose tissue that are abnormal. The other organs of the body are just as sensitive to the effects of insulin as they normally are but because of the high circulating levels of insulin in the hyperinsulinaemic state these organs become over-stimulated, leading to further complications of metabolic syndrome. Professor Gerald Reaven described these organs as 'innocent bystanders' of the increased insulin secretion in a person with muscle and 'adipose insulin resistance. Among the organs affected are:
- The kidneys: which responds to insulin by retaining salt, which leads to hypertension; 50% of people with high blood pressure suffer from metabolic syndrome. The ability of the kidneys to clear uric acid is also reduced, resulting in hyperuricaemia and gout.
- The ovaries: which respond by increasing secretion of testosterone, resulting in PCOS.
- The heart: there is an increase in plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1, which regulates the process of fibrinolysis) resulting in hypercoagulability that further increases the risk of heart disease.
- The colon, breast, prostate gland and other organs: leading to increased cancer risk.
